You may claim tax relief in respect of the cost of certain Medical Expenses paid by you in respect of any individual. You are now able to claim for the years 2016 – 2019 once you can provide receipts of expenses, and these expenses have not been/or will not be reimbursed by your medical insurance company such as Laya Healthcare, VHI or subject to payment by compensation. You can also claim for medical expenses incurred abroad as well as in Ireland.

You are entitled to claim back 20% of what you have paid against your PAYE tax.  In other words, you can claim back €20 for every €100 spent on medical expenses. However, any nursing home expenditure is allowable at the higher tax rate.

Medical expenses that qualify for tax relief:

  • Doctors’ and consultants’ fees
  • Diagnostic procedures carried out on the advice of a practitioner
  • Prescription expenses
  • Hospital expenses
  • Certain appliances for medical care used on the advice of a practitioner
  • Physiotherapy or Orthoptic treatment prescribed by a practitioner
  • Education, Speech and language therapy carried out by a Speech and Language Therapist for a qualifying person – i.e. a person under 18 year of age or if over 18 the individual must be receiving full-time instruction at any university, college, school or other educational establishment
  • Ambulance transport
  • Educational psychological assessments for a qualifying person as outlined above where the Educational Psychologist has expertise in the education of students
  • Certain expenses in respect of a child suffering from a serious life threatening illness
  • Kidney patients’ expenses
  • Particular costs for coeliac & diabetes sufferers.
  • Specialised dental treatment
  • ‘In vitro’ fertilisation (IVF) treatment
  • Non routine dental expenses

A qualifying medical bill is part paid

Should your medical insurance company pay part of your qualifying medical bill or you receive part payment by compensation, then this part payment does not qualify for tax relief.  However, the amount that you have not been compensated for is claimable against your tax.
